Surrogacy and Egg Donation Glossary of Terms
Imagine holding a tiny hand for the first time, those soft fingers wrapping around yours. Picture hearing the precious sounds of “mama” or “dada” fill your world with a joy you never knew existed. But maybe the path to parenthood is not quite as straightforward as you envisioned.
Many couples and individuals are exploring incredible options such as surrogacy or egg donation to build their families. It is an exciting prospect, but it can also feel overwhelming, especially with all the new terms flying around. Do not worry, Carrying Dreams is here to be your partner on this journey. We have created a comprehensive glossary to break down those terms and some additional resources to make this experience smooth sailing.
Intended Parents (IPs)
These are individuals or couples who wish to become parents through assisted reproductive technologies, such as surrogacy or egg donation. They are legally recognized as the child’s parents and are responsible for the child’s upbringing. Intended parents may include heterosexual couples, same-sex couples, or single individuals.
Surrogate/Gestational Carrier (GS/GC)
A woman who agrees to carry and deliver a baby for another person or couple. Unlike traditional surrogacy, a gestational carrier has no genetic link to the child she carries, as the embryo is created using the intended parents’ or donors’ genetic material through IVF.
Egg Donor (ED)
An egg donor is a woman who donates her eggs to help another person or couple conceive a child. The donated eggs are fertilized through IVF, and the resulting embryos are implanted in the intended mother or a gestational carrier. Egg donors undergo medical and psychological screening to make sure their suitability.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
A medical procedure in which an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body in a laboratory setting. The resulting embryo is then transferred to a woman’s uterus with the aim of achieving pregnancy. IVF is used for various fertility issues and in surrogacy arrangements.
Matching
Matching is the process of pairing intended parents with a suitable surrogate or egg donor. This involves evaluating compatibility, preferences, medical histories, and legal considerations to ensure a good fit. Matching is crucial for a positive experience and successful outcome for all parties involved in the reproductive journey.
Compensation
This is the financial payment provided to a surrogate or egg donor for their time, effort, and commitment throughout the assisted reproductive process.
Screening
Screening is the thorough evaluation of surrogates, egg donors, and intended parents, including medical, psychological, and background checks to guarantee a safe and successful reproductive journey.
Legal Process
It is the series of legal steps taken to establish the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved in surrogacy or egg donation so that the intended parents are recognized as the legal parents.
Support System
A support system is the network of emotional, medical, and logistical assistance provided to intended parents, surrogates, and egg donors throughout the reproductive process to ensure everyone’s well-being and success.
